| Generation 1
George Frame1 Stephens was born August
07, 1851 in Tally-Ho, ONT. He married Alice Marjorie Christie. She died 1933.
Notes for George Frame Stephens:
The following is a biographical sketch written by M.F.
Christie for the Stephens Paint Co. news upon the death of George Frame Stephens, April
1921.
G. F. Stephens was born in Tally Ho, Near Collingwood, Ont.
in 1851. He attended the primary and high schools in Collingwood, Ont., and afterwards the
military academy then located in Toronto. On the completion of his studies, he entered the
employ of his uncle who conducted a hardware business at Owen Sound, and later went to
Montreal, where for many years he was connected with the well known wholesale hardware
firm of Benny MacPhearson and Co., representing them on the road, first in the Maritime
Provinces, and the Eastern Townships, and later in Ontario. As evidence of Mr. Stephens'
gift for making lasting and endearing friendships, it was no uncommon thing after many
years to have people call on him and he would introduce them to me as "I used to sell
this man in Prince Edward Island 45 years ago and have not seen him since" or This
man was a youngster in his father's store on the Upper Ottawa when I called there in the
seventies." These are but random illustrations but I mention them to emphasize what
was perhaps Mr. Stephens' most outstanding characteristic--his unconscious power to
attract and retain the confidence, respect, and affection of everyone with whom he came in
contact.
In February 1882, Mr. Stephens, with keen ambition, high
courage, and very little capital, arrived in Winnipeg and established the business with
which his name was so honorably connected. The writer, then a mere youth, joined him in
May of the same year. To my readers who were engaged in business in the eighties and early
nineties it is no necessary to remind them of the many drawbacks and vicissitudes
encountered--I still recollect with what cherry optimism, undaunted courage, and sound
business judgement he met and overcame these repeated discouragements and
difficulties, and inspired and helped others to meet them in the same spirit, and it is a
satisfaction to remember that he lived to see his early struggles of those pioneer days
grow into a large and successful undertaking.
One reason for this was his peculiarly high standard of
rectitude and integrity, and his unwavering loyalty to the highest ideals, which he so
consistently carried out in his business and private life. I have often heard his express
himself in such terms as "When we have to adopt questionable or unfair methods in
doing business, we will go out of it." These characteristics were manifested in
everything. No product was ever permitted to be marketed until it had been demonstrated
beyond question that it would fulfil all claims made for it. There were no half measures,
either right or wrong, and right was the only standard he recognized. No man more richly
deserved the universal reputation he enjoyed for honesty and uprightness.
For many years he was a valued member of the Board of Trade
and other business organizations and his breadth of vision and sound judgement contributed
in no small measure to the formulation of policies that has left a lasting impress on the
industrial and financial affairs of the Canadian West. He always found time however, to
help and forward every movement having for it's object the welfare and betterment of the
community.

in 1940.

Generation 3
Graham Findlay3 Stephens (George Findlay2,
George Frame1) was born June 03, 1912 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and died
December 21, 1961 in Danville, PA. He married Mabel Irene Curiston November 07,
1942 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, daughter of William Curiston and Jennie Springstein. She
was born August 12, 1911 in Semans, Saskatchewan, Canada, and died May 18, 1993 in North
Royalton, Ohio.
Notes for Graham Findlay Stephens:
Graham Findlay Stephens was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada on June 3, 1912, the son of Gerge F. and Mary I Southerland Stephens.
He was educated in the Winnipeg schools and graduated with
an A.B.degree from the University of Manitoba in 1936. He received his Master of Business
Administration in Hospital Administration degree from the University of Chicago in 1938.
Graham took his administrative residency at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1937
to 1938 and then became assistant director of Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois,
serving from 1938 to 1941.
World War II interrupted his career. Graham joined the
Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a flight lieutenant from 1941 to 1945. While in the
service, he fell in love with an Air Force nurse, Mabel Irene Curiston, who he married on
November 7, 1942.
From 1945 to 1948, after being released from the service,
Graham served as Associate Director of Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, and Missouri and also
as Associate Director of the Washington University Course in Hospital Administration.
While in St Louis, a son, George Findlay, was born on May 13, 1947.
In 1948, Graham was hired by Dr. Harold Foss, as
Administrator of the Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville, Pennsylvania. In 1948, the
Stephens family moved from St Louis to Danville taking up residence on Church Street
across from the town jail. Next door neighbors were Dr. Robert (French) Dickey, his wife
Irene, and daughter Gretchen. The Stephens family later moved to 101 G St. (later
Glenbrook Avenue as the neighborhood became more sophisticated) where they resided for
many years. On May 20, 1952, a daughter, Patricia Jean was born. It was also in 1952 that
Graham and his wife became a naturalized American citizen.
Graham was an imposing man, quite tall with what could have
been mistaken for a stern demeanor by those who did not know him. He was, in fact, a
caring, gentleman with a fine sense of humor, totally devoted to his job and to his
family. On the job, his attention to detail and his treatment of all employees equally
earned his allocates from all that knew him. Mary Hartline Yeigh (grandmother of
Jacqueline whom son George would later marry) recalled a time when Graham caught her
reading a newspaper near the end of her shift in the kitchen. The kitchen was clean, there
was no more work to do which Graham apparently recognized as he told Mary that he had
"just stopped by for a glass of milk.
Graham began his career at Geisinger at a time when the
hospital was making its transition from town hospital to regional medical center. he and
other struggled with the growing pains associated with the expansion of a then small
hospital into a vast medical complex.
The author of numerous papers on hospital administration,
Graham was a Fellow and Regent of the American College of Hospital Administrators and a
member of the National Association of Clinic Managers, as well as Chairman of the
Committee on Personal Practices of that organization. He was also a member of the America
Hospital Association and the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania of which he served as
chairman of the committee on insurance.
Graham also held membership in other professional
organizations among which were the Council of Professional Practice, the Committee on
Personnel Practice and the Committee on Personnel Administration, all of the Hospital
Association of Pennsylvania.
President of the Northeast Pennsylvania Hospital
Association, Graham held membership on the Education Policies Committee of the American
College of Hospital Administrators the Purchasing and Maintenance Committee of the
National Association of Clinic Managers, and the governing board of the Hospital
Association of Pennsylvania.
Within the Danville community, Graham was a member of the
board of directors of the Danville Area Red Cross and served with years; two as president
of the Danville YMCA. He also served on the board of directors of the Susquehanna Valley
Council for the Blind, and the local unit of the Crippled Children's Society. He was a
member of the Grove Presbyterian Church and the Frosty Valley Country Club.
Graham died on December 21, 1961 in Danville after a
lengthy bout with cancer. He was 49. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville.
